Completing your own renovations Part 3

March 20, 2023

Our homes are usually our largest purchase. They should always have the highest priority when it comes to monetary spending. The issue is the completion of renovation work while not following the proper building code.

Money is always a factor when you own a property. People often wish to save as much money as they can by completing renovation work and/or changes themselves. They think they can do that, and they may not be aware that they are setting themselves up for lawsuits if those renovations aren’t completed correctly. Using a realtor in this situation is advantageous to the new buyer. A good realtor should pick up these building deficiencies if they exist!

As a realtor, I am aware of several lawsuits where the previous homeowner was successfully sued by the new homeowner. The previous homeowner took down several weight-bearing walls to create a more open space in their living room on the main floor as well as in their recreation room downstairs. Over a period of years, the ceiling on the main floor sagged and the main floor sagged as well. The new owners were successful in suing the previous owners.
