Winter is just around the corner

January 02, 2023

The snowstorm like in the above picture is getting less and less frequent in our area; however, when snow does come, it can be catastrophic. People have been stuck in their homes, stuck on roads, and stuck in ditches for long periods of time. This can be a dangerous situation for those who are unprepared.

It is important for homeowners who are responsible for their own snow clearing to be vigilant and be prepared for the “aftermath” of what comes after a heavy snowfall. Know where to find community “snow clearing” services.

I have lived in this area of the country for over 20 years. I know what can happen and what usually does happen. The electricity usually goes out in a storm. As a family, we have candles, flashlights, and battery-powered lanterns. We also have a propane fireplace that can provide us with heat. We also have a BBQ located under a roofed deck that allows us to cook during a snowfall.

It is great to have a plan in case of a storm. Know where all your batteries and flashlights are. Always check battery life. Make sure you have some source of heat, just in case. Electricity is usually lost, so be careful of burning kerosene inside your home. The fumes are toxic.
